A Touch of Glass

Chrissy Mclelland

My medium of choice is glass. I make a variety of stained glass pieces ranging from 4 inches to 5 feet. What I love about glass is its delicacy. As a sheet of glass it is quite fragile, but when it is cut into smaller pieces and soldered together it is surprisingly strong. I feel that creating stained glass pieces challenges me to use my mechanical skills. Before I had children I was an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer which was a very detailed orientated career. It took patience, intricacy, time, and more patience. This is the same with glass; it is not a process that can be rushed. It is taking the time to perfect each piece so that in the end the final piece is a work of art!

It was 12 yrs ago I took my first class and from then on I was hooked. I have taken only a handful stained glass classes, mostly I am self taught. I love to push the boundaries in creating something unique. In the last few years I have started to explore other forms of glass art; fusing, and lamp work. I have recently taken I few courses and am excited to expand my art. I am fascinated by the act of working with a medium that can be worked on as a solid or in it’s liquid state.

I am very passionate about stained glass, but none of this would be possible without the support from my family. I am happily married with 3 beautiful children, who love everything I make. They are my biggest cheerleaders! I am grateful to be blessed with the friends and family that surround me. They are constantly encouraging me to follow my dreams, and I hope that I can inspire others to follow theirs.
